Steel & Hardness

Blade steel: Damascus Steel

Hardness: 58 to 62 HRC (Rockwell scale)

Hand-forged layered steel folded to reveal a distinctive flowing wave pattern — no two blades are alike. Prized for its hard cutting edge and excellent edge retention. Hand wash, dry immediately, and apply a light coat of food-grade oil to protect the etched pattern.

Care & Maintenance

Hand wash only with warm water and mild soap, and dry immediately — never leave a blade soaking or run it through a dishwasher. Wipe on a light coat of food-grade mineral oil after use to protect the steel, and store it dry in a sheath, knife roll, or on a magnetic strip. A few seconds of care after each use keeps a hand-forged edge true for decades.

Personalisation & Engraving

Add free engraving with the option above — up to 20 characters on the blade, or engrave the leather sheath. Adds 2 business days. Engraved pieces are final sale. For any other engraving request, email us at info@northboundblade.com.

From the forge

About this piece

Four hand-forged Damascus blades set in warm rosewood-toned handles, banded with alternating ebony and brass rings for a distinctive, tailored look.

The set covers the core of daily prep: a long slicer, a large chef's knife, a wide cleaver-style chopper, and a nimble utility knife — each blade forged and ground by hand, so the exact grain of the Damascus pattern varies slightly piece to piece.

What's in the set:

  • Slicer — 8.8" blade, 13" overall
  • Chef's Knife — 7.5" blade, 11.6" overall
  • Cleaver-Style Chopper — 7.6" blade, 11.7" overall
  • Utility Knife — 4.7" blade, 8.9" overall

The details: Damascus steel (58–62 HRC), forged and hand-finished, full tang construction, straight edge. Rosewood-toned handles banded in ebony and brass. Hand wash, dry immediately, light coat of food-grade oil.

A gift worth giving: A tighter, more focused 4-piece set for the cook who wants the essentials without the extras — a good “starter” hand-forged gift for a housewarming or graduation.

Every piece leaves the forge ready for a lifetime of use — our Knife Care guide covers the few simple habits that keep a hand-forged edge that way.

FAQ

Is this dishwasher safe? No — hand wash only, dry immediately, and apply a light coat of food-grade oil to protect the Damascus pattern.

What does "full tang" mean, and why does it matter? The blade steel runs the full length of the handle in one solid piece rather than a separate tang inserted into the handle — it's what serious cooks and collectors look for, since it means better balance and a knife that won't loosen at the handle over years of use.

Why only 4 pieces instead of 5? This set drops the second, smaller chef's knife found in our 5-piece sets — a tighter lineup for cooks who want the core essentials.

01 — Forged

Shaped at the anvil

Bar stock is heated and hammered to shape by hand — every bevel drawn out at the anvil, never stamped from a sheet.

02 — Tempered

Hardened true

Each blade is hardened and tempered in controlled cycles, balancing a keen, hard edge with a resilient spine.

03 — Finished

Fitted & inspected

Ground, polished and fitted with its handle, then inspected edge to pommel before it ever leaves the forge.
