Care & Maintenance

Hand wash only with warm water and mild soap, and dry immediately — never leave a blade soaking or run it through a dishwasher. Wipe on a light coat of food-grade mineral oil after use to protect the steel, and store it dry in a sheath, knife roll, or on a magnetic strip. A few seconds of care after each use keeps a hand-forged edge true for decades.

Personalisation & Engraving

Add free engraving with the option above — up to 20 characters on the blade, or engrave the leather sheath. Adds 2 business days. Engraved pieces are final sale. For any other engraving request, email us at info@northboundblade.com.

Knife Shape

What is a Bunka?

The Bunka is a traditional Japanese all-purpose kitchen knife, recognizable by its angular K-tip (kiritsuke-style) point. That sharper point gives more precise control for detail work — trimming, scoring, and fine cuts — while the blade still handles everyday chopping and slicing with ease. It's a favorite first Japanese-style knife for cooks who want one blade that does it all.

From the forge

About this piece

A Japanese-style Bunka, the all-purpose kitchen knife with an angular K-tip (kiritsuke-style) point that gives cleaner control on detail work than a rounded blade. The blade is hand-forged high-carbon steel with a brushed satin finish, a textured band along the spine near the bolster, and a bright, polished cutting edge.

The handle is an octagonal wa-handle in swirled pink, magenta and white resin, set against a polished, faceted brass bolster. No two handles swirl quite the same way.

The details: Blade length 178mm (7"), total length 325mm (12.8"). Hand-forged high-carbon steel with a brushed satin finish and polished cutting edge. Octagonal wa-handle: pink swirl resin with a brass bolster. Includes a leather sheath. Hand wash, dry immediately, and give the blade an occasional light coat of oil.

A gift worth giving: The Bunka's angular tip and all-purpose blade make it a favourite for cooks who want one knife for chopping, slicing and detail work, and the bright pink handle makes it easy to spot on any counter. Free engraving on the blade or the sheath, up to 20 characters.

A high-carbon edge rewards a few simple habits: our Knife Care guide covers them.

01 — Forged

Shaped at the anvil

Bar stock is heated and hammered to shape by hand — every bevel drawn out at the anvil, never stamped from a sheet.

02 — Tempered

Hardened true

Each blade is hardened and tempered in controlled cycles, balancing a keen, hard edge with a resilient spine.

03 — Finished

Fitted & inspected

Ground, polished and fitted with its handle, then inspected edge to pommel before it ever leaves the forge.
