Care & Maintenance
Hand wash only with warm water and mild soap, and dry immediately — never leave a blade soaking or run it through a dishwasher. Wipe on a light coat of food-grade mineral oil after use to protect the steel, and store it dry in a sheath, knife roll, or on a magnetic strip. A few seconds of care after each use keeps a hand-forged edge true for decades.

Add free engraving with the option above — up to 20 characters on the blade, or engrave the leather sheath. Adds 2 business days. Engraved pieces are final sale. For any other engraving request, email us at info@northboundblade.com.

From the forge
About this piece
A kitchen cleaver forged from one piece of carbon steel.
The blade flares out from the handle to a long, straight cutting edge, made for chopping vegetables and herbs and portioning meat on the board. The handle is the same bar of steel, drawn out and bent back into an open loop.
- One-piece carbon steel: blade and handle are a single forging, with nothing to work loose.
- Loop handle: gives a secure grip and lets the cleaver hang on a hook or rail.
- Forge finish and satin blade: the dark forge scale is left on the spine and handle, and the blade face is ground to a satin finish.
- Leather sheath included.
- Free engraving: up to 20 characters on the blade or on the leather sheath. Engraving adds 2 business days, and engraved pieces are final sale.
Size (approximate): about 11 in (28 cm) overall, with a blade of about 5.5 in (14 cm). Every cleaver is forged by hand, so sizes vary slightly.
What's included: 1 cleaver and a leather sheath.
Made to order: each cleaver is forged after you order.
Care: carbon steel can rust if it is left wet. Hand wash, dry right away, and wipe the steel with a little food-safe oil now and then. Not for the dishwasher.
Simple habits keep hand-forged steel at its best. See our Knife Care guide.
01 — Forged
Shaped at the anvil
Bar stock is heated and hammered to shape by hand — every bevel drawn out at the anvil, never stamped from a sheet.
02 — Tempered
Hardened true
Each blade is hardened and tempered in controlled cycles, balancing a keen, hard edge with a resilient spine.
03 — Finished
Fitted & inspected
Ground, polished and fitted with its handle, then inspected edge to pommel before it ever leaves the forge.
